Hiking in Summer Pro Tips for Beginners

Hiking during the summer months can be quite exciting. Beginners might feel all adventurous but with the rugged terrain and heat, a normal hike can also seem challenging. Here are a few pro tips that can help enjoy a safe hiking trip.

  • Avoid hiking in hours with heat at its peak. Either start early in the morning or late afternoon. The intensity of the sun is usually strong between the hours of 10AM and 4PM.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water frequently even without feeling thirsty. An individual must carry at least 3 liters of water during the session. One can drink electrolyte drinks so as to compensate for lost minerals during excessive sweating. Keep water cool in insulated water bottles or hydration packs.
  • Wear breathable, lightweight and light colored clothing to reflect heat. Wear long sleeve t-shirts to protect from insect bites and sunburns. Moisture wicking fabrics will help stay cool and keep the body dry.
  • Carry sun protective gear such as sunglasses and sunscreen. Apply the cream every 2 hours to avoid tan and sun damage. Wear UV-protective shades along with a wide-brimmed hat to keep the face protected from harmful rays.
  • Wear the right hiking boots that are well-ventilated and breathable. Use moisture-wicking socks and not the regular cotton socks to avoid blisters and excessive moisture.
  • Always plan the hike in advance, be aware of the trail and check the weather conditions. Check for any news on thunderstorms or heat waves. Some trails can have sudden drop in temperature.
  • Carry a proper hiking backpack. Pack light and smart. Carry essentials like first aid kit, map, compass, multi-tools, flashlight, snacks and extra water. Avoid over packing.
  • Take breaks whenever needed and sip water or have a snack to stay energetic. Try to hike with a friend or a buddy for safety. Always inform family members before hiking.
